Ryan Edward Hatfield

January 23, 1981 — May 9, 2023

Ryan Hatfield of Tonganoxie, KS, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on May 9th, 2023 at age 42 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Ryan was born on January 23, 1981 in Jefferson City, MO. He graduated from Jefferson City High School in 1999 and the University of Missouri-Rolla in 2002 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He married Joanne DeHaven, his high school sweetheart, in 2006 in Negril, Jamaica and they welcomed their two daughters in 2012 and 2014. Ryan began working for Kiewit Power Engineers in Lenexa, KS first as an intern in 2001 and later as a full-time electrical engineer in 2003.

Ryan was a devote husband and father and a diehard Green Bay Packers fan. His favorite pastimes were watching his daughters’ sporting activities and playing cards with family and friends. Whenever he had a chance to get away, his favorite places were near a pool, in a lake, or jumping in the ocean. He passed his love of the water onto his girls, and they enjoyed many vacations as a family at the Lake of the Ozarks and his version of paradise, Oceanside, CA. At work, Ryan most enjoyed mentoring others and watching them flourish. He gained many friends at Kiewit who are now considered family. Most recently, Ryan was Director of Electrical and Instrumentation and Controls Engineering and Design Area Manager. Throughout his cancer diagnosis, he found immense reward in continuing to support his colleagues, projects, and department. Kiewit continues to support his family in more ways than imaginable and the family is forever grateful.

He is survived by his wife of 17 years Joanne Hatfield, daughters Charlotte (10) and Georgia (8) Hatfield, faithful dogs Reggie and Nelson, father Richard Hatfield of Tonganoxie, KS, sisters Kim Hatfield of Jefferson City, MO, Ginger Steinmetz of Jefferson City, MO, Kelly Ralston (Bryan) of Burke, VA, brother Bill Hatfield of Jefferson City, MO, and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother Donna Hatfield, brother-in-law Mark Steinmetz, and his loyal chihuahuas Layla and Guapo.

A celebration in his honor will be held on Tuesday May 23rd from 2-6 PM at the Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park Grand Pavilion in Lenexa, KS. Memorial contributions are suggested to Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care (https://www.kchospice.org/donation/), or his daughters, Charlotte and Georgia Hatfield.
