Donna Lee
Losie
b. Mar 17, 1937
Donna Lee Losie was born on March 17, 1937, in Wichita, Kansas. A beloved daughter to Frederick Losie of Rock River, Michigan, and Marion Emma (Whichcord) Losie of Anthony, Kansas. Sister to Dorothea Sherwood and Laverne Losie.
Donna Lee, also known as Donna, D'lee and Nana to a special few, lived a life rich in creativity. Starting at an early age, it was quickly known to all that Donna had artistic gifts. Her parents nurtured her imagination through storytelling, piano, needlework, floriculture and mixed media artistry. Her elementary school acknowledged her gifts by awarding her a full scholarship to a summer art school.
Donna graduated from an all-girl Catholic school in Kansas City. Her continued studies led her to attend and graduate from the Wichita Business College, where she learned business management, a career spanning over thirty years.
Donna met her first husband, Jack Law Jr, on a blind date set up by her brother-in-law, Gene Sherwood. They would come to marry on May 14, 1955, after she turned eighteen years old, Jack at the age of twenty-six. During their marriage they had four children; David, Richard, Karen and Kevin. Their marriage would conclude in divorce twenty years later. During a time when women could not legally open a bank account without their husband's permission, Donna was able to secure and purchase a home outright on her own for her and her children.
During the late 1980s, Donna's creative path would lead her to founding a Victorian bridal accessory company known as Something Olde & Something New. With her daughter's help, they created intricate Victorian-inspired accessories by hand. Their items were sold in the Dallas and Kansas City Apparel Marts. During one Dallas market, LA designer Susan Lane, designer and owner of Country Elegance, discovered their business and would later become a stockist for their product through Clifton Wilhite, a prominent mid-century, high-end fashion designer based out of Dallas, Texas, whose custom evening wear and cocktail dresses were immensely popular with Texas socialites, debutantes and the regional elite. It was during this time that Donna actively pursued her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Wichita State University. With her family in attendance cheering her on, she graduated in 1995 at the age of fifty-eight. Donna had the opportunity to showcase her paintings at an art exhibit at WSU and Wichita's Gallery 12. In addition to her own continued creative practices, she taught art to children at The Wichita Children’s Museum, City Arts, to homeschooled children and her grandchildren in her home.
She met her second husband, Charles, while both were furthering their education at Wichita State University. They married on May 19, 1989, in Wichita. In 1999, they moved to Bradenton, Florida, where Donna continued as a notable oil painter connected to the Florida region and the greater Ringling Circus family. With an established artistic career, she is best known for her vintage-inspired prints and abstract design oil paintings, which often paid homage to Ringling circus performers and the picturesque Floridian seascapes. Her creative works have been featured in various regional galleries and showcases, including the Village of the Arts in Bradenton. Charles' job relocated them to Savannah, Georgia, where they resided until moving to Kansas City at the end of 2024.
Charles and Donna's love for each other was palpable, unwavering. A partnership with a shared devotion to the arts, culinary interests, music, travel, their family and friends. Through cremation, their ashes will be eternally bound and released at their favorite respite, the beaches of Anna Maria Island in Sarasota, Florida.
Donna is preceded in death by her father, Frederick, mother, Marion, sister, Dorothea, brother, Laverne, and son, Kevin.
Donna is survived by her children, David (Nancy) Law, Richard (Phyllis) Law, Karen (Kyle) Doby, as well as her grandchildren Jeremy Law (Kristy), Danielle Doby, Maeghen Law, Sadie Stanton (Andrew), Lauren Doby, Eric Law (Julie), Dillon Law, Kevin Law Jr, and great-grandchildren Kailen Tosses, Madox Law, Braxton Law, Illeana Law-Trudeau, Sophia Law, Madilyn Law, Emma Law, Isabelle Stanton, Adison Law, Jackson Law, Nolan Law, Colton Law, and Wylder Stanton.
We will remember her in the soft breeze that greets us at the coastline, the scent of warm coffee, glitter that fills our holiday cards and the possibility of living on a blank canvas. Her legacy lives on in the creative endeavors of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the community that will forever miss her.
In remembrance of Donna’s life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to either Wichita Children’s Theatre & Dance Center https://wctdc.org/donate or Juniper Arts Academy https://www.juniperartsacademy.org/donate.
